Lot 4560
Constantine II, as Caesar, 316-337. Follis (Bronze, 19 mm, 2.67 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate, irregular mint, after 325. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB Laureate head of Constantine II to right. Rev. VIRTV-S AVGG / ST(crescent)RL Campgate with open doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 291 and 294-5 (for prototype). Slightly rough and with minor flan faults, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

This piece is a mule with an obverse of Constantine II and a reverse of Constantine I. The style is clearly unofficial, indicating a contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. Interestingly, the obverse die was also used with a 'CAESARVM NOSTRORVM' reverse with a mint mark belonging to Aquileia .
